The future of Erasmus + to be discussed in Florence

100 esperti di 32 Paesi europei “riscrivono” il Programma europeo

From 21 to 23 September, Florence will become the capital of the school of tomorrow: 100 experts from the Erasmus national agencies, managing the programme Erasmus+ for schools, from 32 European countries, are going to meet representatives of the Miur and the EU commission.

During the meeting in the “Centro visite parco delle Cascine”, participants will take stock of the management of the EU programme and will draw up proposals for 2020, when the Erasmus+ programme will end and will be replaced by new European programmes for Education and training.

Sara Pagliai, coordinator of Indire’s national agency Erasmus+ which in Italy manages the school, university and adult learning sectors, stated: « We are proud to host in Florence our colleagues coming from 32 EU countries, to discuss and share ideas on the future of Erasmus + and the collaboration among schools in Europe. A significant meeting taking place on the same days and in the same city where the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Theresa May is going to give her speech on Brexit. We hope that the concrete results of these 30 years of Erasmus could account for the best proof of the unity and collaboration of European countries».

Erasmus+ for schools: the Italian data

In 2017, the available Italian budget for mobility and cooperation projects for schools is about 36 million euros. Thanks to the mobility projects for learning, schools sent teachers, students and school personnel abroad for teaching experiences, training and job shadowing. Italy received 662 candidatures for these types of projects, 120 were approved after formal and qualitative selection, allowing 2,561 (+ 21% compared to 2016) teachers, managers and administrative staff to join in European mobility projects for a training course, job shadowing, or teaching assignments. The financial commitment to support mobility in this area is € 5,288,751 (+ 22.6% over the 2016 budget). Each project on average will allow the mobility of 21 people. The most active regions are Campania, Sicily and Puglia.

Erasmus + also includes strategic partnerships on school education, which can be implemented by schools of all levels and by organisations and businesses operating in the educational, training, youth and work sectors. These are projects of a wider dimension than those realised only by schools. 100 of these projects, coordinated by Italian schools, have been approved with a financial commitment of over 30 million euros.

30 Years of European School Programmes

Prior to 2014, the school sector benefited from a number of European education programmes with Erasmus +. Since 1995, school teachers have been able to carry out in-service training activities with scholarships to attend courses in Europe. From 1995 to 2013, as many as 16,773 Italian teachers joined these mobility programmes. Similarly, from 2014 to 2016, the Erasmus + programme allowed 5,339 teachers and school staff to undergo on-the-job training: training courses, job shadowing and teaching assignments at European schools. Between 1995 and 2013, the support action for future teachers was introduced, allowing some 2,160young people to experience teaching activities in European schools.

As far as co-operation projects between schools are concerned, from 2000 to today some 5,200 projects (school partnerships, and strategic partnerships) have been realised, and have allowed Italian educational institutions to work in cooperation with European schools and carry out mobility activities for teachers and students, for a total of over 143,000 people.
