Since 2016, the research project “Innovative models of work experience schemes for school students” has been included in the multi-fund National Operational Programme (2014IT05M2OP001) “For schools – competences and learning environments” 2014 – 2020, financed under Axis I – “investing in competences, education and lifelong learning”.

The research project is aimed at understanding and modelling organisational aspects and results of the training processes accompanying work experience schemes for school students. In particular, it aims at identifying solutions allowing schools to make the most of the relationship with the productive world, assimilate Work-Based Learning practices in use in companies, and sustain a model allowing school institutions to redeem the central role of the planning of work experience schemes, in line with specific objective 10.6 “ “Qualifying interventions in the sector of education, technical and vocational education and training and higher technical education” (qualification of the sector of technical and vocational education and training with particular regard to vulnerable sectors of society; system actions for the development and coordination of higher technical institutes and professional technical poles)”.

In particular, in the 2018/2019, the research project is structured along two parallel research axes, aimed at the analysis and designing of innovative models of work experience schemes for school students and apprenticeship.

The two actions have in common the aim of investigating successful experiences and producing dynamic and modular models for the transferability of significant methodological and organisational elements.

At completion of the analysis phase, a reference framework outlying the connection between pedagogical/training aspects of work experience schemes and the development of soft skills and XXI century competences will be issued.

The research involves different types and levels of schools and various sectors of production, including Made in Italy, Intelligent and sustainable industry, Cultural heritage and Creativity industry. Special attention is given to economic, cultural and productive scenarios, characterising the so called 4.0 economy from open innovation to personalisation of production, robotics and digital marketing.

These transformations call for the need of new reference points for schools, in relation to the cultural system, businesses, organisations and institutions. Segments and scenarios of production have been completely reorganised and now offer new possibilities to relaunch small businesses in our country and the made in Italy. Moreover, as far as the activities, experiences and opportunities offered by the work experience schemes for school students are concerned, they represent an important challenge for the training system, in the different levels of education.

The project focuses on the analysis of work experience schemes in terms of their integration within basic didactics, methodologies, and in particular, laboratory teaching and organisational and management models. Starting form this, the model description highlights the characteristics of the experiences which generated positive outcomes in terms of educational goals, development of competences, organisation and connection between schools, territory, businesses and institutions, and that are replicable, considering specific local characteristics and different school contexts.

Moreover, the project foresees the observation and identification of innovative practices that facilitate the spreading of apprenticeship training, and provide school communities and the world of work with models highlighting “authentic interchange” between schools and the world of work. Therefore, on this front, the project has the objective of creating innovative transferable and replicable models and contributing to the expansion of the first level apprenticeship training offer for the higher education diploma.

This investigation phase expands the objectives that characterized the first years of the project. The model for the designing of training in work experience schemes for school students of upper secondary school, used as part of the “Traineeship” action, was focused on the re-elaboration of the experiences conducted with the companies and schools that participated in the Federmeccanica project and Federmanager “IMO: The Mechanical Industry in support of Employability”. The project action took over and systematized the main choices and methodology of numerous interventions previously carried out by the same Federmeccanica, Federmanager, Assolombarda and other territorial associations, involving 50 technical and professional institutes from 18 Italian regions, in testing the models.
