Language assistants

The Language assistants programme is the result of bilateral agreements between Italy and seven EU countries (Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, UK and Spain) and is aimed at fostering and supporting the diffusion of the respective national languages.

It is divided into two parts: the first for the Italian language assistants abroad, and the second dedicated to language assistants in Italian schools.

Besides the programme for Italian language assistants abroad, from this year, Indire manages in collaboration with the Miur also the programme for European cooperation of foreign language assistants in Italian schools.

The language assistants abroad programme allows newly graduates, under 30 years of age, to spend a school year in the schools of one of the partner countries and flank an Italian language teacher.

Similarly, the programme for foreign language assistants in Italy allows students and graduates coming from the seven member countries to serve in Italian schools, collaborating with the teachers of foreign languages.

The assistantship experience  provides a great opportunity for training and cultural exchange, and at the same time, the presence of a mother tongue assistant in Italian schools represents a valuable learning opportunity for foreign language teaching.

In the school year 2023-24, the Italian language assistants assigned and in service in schools abroad are about two hundred, while foreign language assistants in Italy are more than one hundred and fifty two.
