FREDERIKSBORG GYMNASIUM AND HF - HILLERØD

Frederiksborg Gymnasium and HF is located in Hillerød, a medium-sized town only 36 kilometers from the centre of Copenhagen. The school is beautifully situated right by a wood and a lake. Also it is only a 5-minute walk from Hillerød train station.
Frederiksborg Gymnasium and HF was founded in 1630 by King Christian the 4th. It is one of the largest grammar schools in Denmark as regards the number of students (around 900 students). 80% of our students take A-levels (The Upper Secondary School Leaving Examination, "studentereksamen", 3 years) whereas 20% study for the Higher Preparatory Examination ("HF", 2 years). Both exams qualify students for admission to university and other further and higher education. Most students are between 16 and 19 and are admitted to the school after about 10 years in primary and lower secondary school. In North Zealand about 55% of the young people of a year group choose to take either A-levels or the Higher Preparatory Course.
The staff includes about 90 teachers, all graduates from the university. Most teachers have a major in one subject (a four-year course) and a minor in another (a two-year course). Further credentials are obtained while in service. At the moment Frederiksborg Gymnasium and HF has 34 classes, each class consisting of about 28 students. The gymnasium is divided into a languages and a mathematics line. The two lines have a common core of obligatory subjects (e.g. Danish, history, religion, art, music, sport) as well as subjects that are distinctive to each line. The core of basic subjects must be offered at all schools whereas optional subjects vary from school to school. With around 900 students it is possible to offer a great variety of subjects, a wide range of which may/must be studied at high level.

The school year starts in mid-August and ends in mid-June. All students attend approximately 32 lessons a week. Written and oral exams take place in May and June.
Frederiksborg Gymnasium and HF is a democratic school. The students and teachers each have councils where essential topics are discussed and decisions are made concerning what each group wants. We also have a school-board with 12 members who represent the students, the teachers, the parents and the local community. Our headmaster ("rektor") is responsible for everyday life at the school.
Frederiksborg Gymnasium and HF provides a creative environment: We offer music, art and sports, and a number of extra-curricular activities flourish at the school, e.g. choral singing, bands, ceramics, soccer, basketball etc.

Øresund: the gate to the Baltic

We have morning assemblies twice a week where the headmaster, the staff and the students meet to sing together, to exchange information and to enjoy different kinds of artistic performance by individual students or groups. Throughout the year we have several concerts, art exhibitions, sports activities, school dances and once a year we present a musical or a play. Frederiksborg Gymnasium and HF encourages an international perspective since we do believe that this is the way to create international understanding, contact and co-operation. We have worked with the Comenius Riverproject.

Hamlet's Castle

The students go abroad at least once during their time at the school. We have guest teachers, job-swops and guest students each year. We have two "international classes", and at all levels exchanges with students in foreign countries are encouraged.
