Introduction and background information
The project was born in 1996
under the European Community Socrates Program, Comenius Action 1
It will be completed in three
years and the results published in 1999.
The project remit is to investigate
the historical role that has been played by exemplar European rivers in
helping to facilitate travel, trade, and socio-economic and cultural development,
at both regional and European level. And to assess the resulting impact
of industrialisation, urbanisation and agriculture on the river environment.
