Erasmus Orchestra

La musica è un linguaggio di fratellanza
e l’orchestra è l’embrione della società,
perché tutti devono ascoltare anche le voci degli altri.
Uto Ughi

The Erasmus orchestra’s international value

The Erasmus orchestra was created in March 2017, on the initiative of the Indire’s Erasmus agency on the occasion of the celebrations for the 30 years of the European mobility programme (that allowed more than 4 million youths to study and train abroad). The music ensemble, unique in its kind, is made up of students of Italian conservatories and music institutes who participated or are taking part in an Erasmus international mobility programme.

The initiative carries a deeply symbolic meaning and aims to promote the values of the Erasmus generation that is open, dynamic and supportive, and the values of Europe, by using music as a metaphor of integration, encounter and development of competences beyond any linguistic, geographical and cultural barriers.

Since its debut in the Festival of Europe 2017, the orchestra’s performances have been greatly appreciated gaining national and international attention from mass media and institutions. This persuaded the Indire’s Erasmus + agency to invest in the project also in 2018, European year of cultural heritage.

In a difficult time for international relationships, music and culture are the favourite ground to promote encounter and confrontation between people. For this reason, the Indire’s national agency Erasmus+ undertakes to support the Erasmus orchestra all through 2018 and beyond with further developments of the project.

Future initiatives include: involving students from other countries; performing in Europe and in the rest of the world; and disseminating the values of the programme providing occasions for cultural confrontation and dialogue. Through the orchestra, the agency aims to contribute to valorise talents and excellences of conservatories and Italian musical institutes, by developing collaboration and partnerships guaranteeing a unique showcase opportunity for young Italian musicians that will give impetus to their career thanks to public performances at international level.

The vast potential of the orchestra is proven by the many requests for performances arrived in these months from China, Canada, and Festivals such as Rome Film Fest. For this reason, in a perspective of growth, it is foreseen the joining of international networks, such as the European Association of Conservatories, and the starting of structural fundraising projects aimed at supporting the orchestra and cultural and social initiatives.

In order to favour maximum participation musicians are recruited through international public calls open to all the students who participated or are taking part in an Erasmus mobility experience.

The Erasmus orchestra’s concerts are always free-of-charge.
